Pai Gow Poker has become quite a popular game at online casinos because of its Asian Twist. The card game was developed in the United States to spice up your ordinary Poker game. Learning how to play Pai Gow Poker is quite simple. However, it would be advised that you know the different winning hand ranks in Poker.

Pai Gow Poker uses a 53-card deck that has 52 cards all in all. What makes it 53 is because you get to use the Joker card as a wild card when you play Pai Gow Poker online. A wild card that’s pulled out will typically let you finish your winning hand since it can be anything from a ten, a Jack, a Queen, or even a King.

If you play Pai Gow Poker at land-based casinos, you can choose to play as a player or the dealer. On the other hand, in the online version, the dealer will take this role.

Pai Gow Rules

You will be dealt with only seven cards when you play Pai Gow. You do not get to draw additional cards to improve your hand unlike in Video Poker. You basically have to split two hands that are made up of a five-card hand and a two-card hand. However, your five-hand card has to be better than your second-hand.

The game typically will not let you advance if your second hand is better than your five-card hand. This is sometimes referred to as an illegal move. Take note that the five-card hand is ranked using the same Poker cards ranking system in Pai Gow Poker:

  • Royal Flush – Ace, King, Queen, Jack and a ten. All cards must have the same rank.
  • Straight Flush – Consecutive cards in numerical order that have the same suit.
  • Flush – Five cards of the same suit.
  • Four of a Kind – Four cards with the same suit and one kicker.
  • Fullhouse – Three cards with the same rank and two cards of a different matching rank.
  • Straight – Five cards in numerical order.
  • Three of a Kind – The cards of the same rank and two kickers.
  • Two Pairs – Two pairs of cards with different matching ranks.
  • One Pair – Two cards that are the same.
  • High Card – Any card that is higher than your other cards from your hand.

The main objective in Pai Gow Poker is to split your seven-cards into one hand of five cards and one hand of two cards. You have to make sure that your five-card hand will always have a higher rank than your second hand of two cards in order to win!
